Approach

I am committed to navigating cultural, racial, socio-economic, gender, spiritual and any other form of diversity in which a client may define their identity.  Attunement, curiosity, empathy, and collaboration are foundational to my participation in a therapeutic relationship.  I orient around strengths-based, scientifically supported/evidence-based practice while prioritizing the inevitably complex and unique qualities that make each individual.  While I am comfortable orienting from a specific theoretical framework, if requested, I tend to use an eclectic and creative approach.

To be clear, you do not need to know anything about theory!  If you would like to know a little more about the nuts and bolts of my practice please continue.

What kind of therapy is this? Therapy is oriented around many different theories, philosophies, values and goals which include a lot of overlap and recycling of core concepts.  Some of the buzzwords you might hear these days include CBT, ACT, DBT, EMDR, exposure, solution-oriented, psycho-dynamic, narrative, family-systems, motivational, evidence-based therapy/practice.  I can work from any of these orientations if that is what you want.

My work is most influenced by: Attachment Theory, CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral Theory), DBT (emphasis on emotional regulation), IFS (Internal Family Systems) and Narrative Therapy.

Guiding Principles of my work

  • Doing the work now is a gift to your future self.

  • Discomfort is part of the growth process. Are you orienting ourselves toward growth in a constructive and realistic sense? And/or are you creating unnecessary suffering through patterns of behavior and misguided expectations?

  • Self-care is non-negotiable to be a healthy human being. How can I help strengthen your self-care? Is this an opportunity to revisit your priorities?

  • In what ways do you live your life reactively versus proactively? How can you be more intentional?

  • Inner turmoil - aka stress, worry, angst - is often a byproduct of your core values being at odds. And when two core values of equal importance are in opposition to each other, what is the answer?

  • Hardship is an inherent part of the human experience. What parts of your life need to be accepted as beyond your control? And, when might you seize upon or create an opportunity to strengthen your sense of agency?

  • Achievement is nice - and - the process that facilitated or inspired your growth is where the meaningful change happened.
